CP18: Acceptance and Implementation of NOcsPS in the View of Farmers

In a nutshell

What?

We investigate which social factors are important for NOcsPS agriculture to be accepted and implemented by farms. Accordingly, we develop strategies that would strengthen this model of agriculture.

Why?

The implementation of NOcsPS farming systems depends first of all on how farmers view this model. In addition, strategies must be developed that are mutually supported by farmers and other social actors (e.g., the general public).

How?

We conduct interviews in different regions with farmers and other stakeholders (e.g., representatives of nature conservation associations, local water suppliers, or consumers) to specify possible alternatives for implementing the NOcsPS model in agriculture.

Whether the NOcsPS crop system will be accepted and implemented by farmers depends essentially on the views of the farm managers towards this model.

A wide spectrum of possible factors which influence the acceptance and implementation have to be taken into consideration, ranging from the attitude (e.g. how broad-minded they are towards technical innovation) to social norms (e.g. influence by family or neighbours) and the capacity of adequate resources for implementation.

The actual implementation will very much depend on whether it is possible to develop strategies which can be borne on partnership basis including various members of society in a particular region e.g. when farmers get suitable support from local consumers).

The aim of the subproject is to analyze the influencing factors concerning the acceptance and implementation of a NOcsPS model and to evaluate the relative significance and interplay of these factors and to win in-depth insight into working patterns and leverage of the central key factors in order to obtain acceptance and implementation of a NOcsPS model. Based on this, scenarios will be developed for the implementation of a NOcsPS model in selected pilot regions in a model that builds on participation of a broad range of local actors from within and outside agriculture.

With a specific emphasis on the most important farm types in Germany, the whole palette of possible appraisal factors for a NOcsPS model will be analysed. This section builds on in-depth case studies in which Identified key factors regarding the acceptance of a NOcsPS model will be further investigated.

For two contrasting pilot regions (district or municipal level) scenarios for the implementation of a NOcsPS model will be developed. For this, farmers will meet with other actors from the region e.g. representatives of nature protection organisations, local water suppliers or consumers.

The aim is to concretise various implementations of a NOcsPS-model for agriculture which can actively be constructed with the assistance of a wide range of local actors e.g. special local marketing possibilities or crowd-funding activities for the agricultural businesses.

Expected Results:

Factors of acceptance and implementation of NOcsPS wil be identified and in-depth recognition of key factor work mechanisms for acceptance and implementation of NOcsPS will be gained. This is expected to lead to integrated implementation scenarios for NOcsPS on a regional level.
